Volunteer of the Month
Every month we highlight one of our own. This month we are delighted to highlight...
One of our newest volunteers, Emily recently sat down with our Executive Director to tell everyone a little about herself.
- Please provide us with a bit of information on your background and what you are currently doing.
I am currently studying at University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley and will be receiving my Associate's degree this spring with an emphasis in Communications! From there I plan to attend University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to complete my Bachelor's degree with a major in Communications. UWEC offers a "create" your own minor. Mine will consist of Graphic Design, Digital Media, and Engineering. I am from Melrose, WI, a small town of 500 located about 45 minutes north of La Crosse. In Melrose, I grew up in a Victorian house and there's always something cool and unique to learn, which makes me super excited to be able to volunteer at this amazing house!
- Besides your love of Victorian homes, what sparked your interest in volunteering at Hearthstone?
I really wanted to volunteer somewhere for fun to de-stress from school obligations. I'm a huge history nerd, spending many vacations visiting the Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village in Dearborn MI, so this volunteering position was just calling out to me! I never would have imagined that this position would have become such a great opportunity!
- What do you look forward to doing at Hearthstone?
I really look forward to helping out in anyway that I can. I especially want to learn about all the interesting aspects the house has to offer! I'm really excited about getting to help run the social media accounts, conducting interviews, and being a greeter/docent! I tell my family daily about all the exciting things I get to be apart of, and they can't wait to visit! They actually seem a bit jealous! I'm also looking forward to getting to volunteer with other amazing people from the community!
- Anything of else of interest about you that you would like to share?
I love to travel and experience new and exciting things in life. Last summer I was actually an Au Pair for a family in Italy. I was able to visit Rome, Milan, and Venice, as well as Venice's several smaller outlying islands: Torcello (known for it's mosaics), Murano (known for it's glass-making), and Burano (known for it's lace work and brightly colored homes). It was a very breathtaking journey, one I will never forget! When I am not in school or volunteering, you can find me at Festival Foods where I have been a Customer Service Representative for one year now. It is a great company and I am proud to work for the Skogen Family.
